About Red Oak Living

Red Oak Living is a historical and material archive focused on Italian interior design of the mid-twentieth century — roughly the period between the end of the Second World War and the mid-1970s. The site documents the designers, manufacturers, and objects that defined this period, drawing on primary sources where available.

Scope and purpose

The Italian mid-century interior is a well-documented subject in design history, but the documentation is often scattered across manufacturer catalogues, exhibition records, and academic publications that are not easily accessible outside specialist libraries. This archive attempts to gather the factual record — dates, collaborations, production histories, material specifications — in a readable format with clear source attribution.

The focus is on three areas: the design thinking of individual architects (principally Gio Ponti and his immediate collaborators), the manufacturing infrastructure that produced the objects (particularly Cassina and B&B Italia), and the lighting design that defined the spatial character of Italian rooms in the 1960s (Arteluce and Flos).

This is not a commercial operation. There are no products for sale, no affiliate links, and no recommendations oriented toward purchasing decisions. The content is informational.

Editorial standards

Each article identifies its sources directly in the text and in the footnote reference at the end. Where dates or attributions are contested in the scholarly literature, that ambiguity is noted rather than resolved by editorial preference. The archive does not present contested claims as settled facts.

External links point to institution sites (Triennale di Milano, Gio Ponti Archives, ADI), manufacturer histories (Cassina, Flos, B&B Italia), and peer-reviewed publications where available. Links to commercial retailers are not included.

Author expertise

The archive is maintained by the editorial team at Red Oak Living. The research draws on design history literature published between 1960 and the present, manufacturer archives, and exhibition catalogues from the primary period. Where original language sources (Italian) are used, translations are our own unless otherwise noted.

Contact and corrections

Corrections and additions — particularly from researchers with access to primary archival material — are welcome. If you have identified a factual error or can provide additional documentation for a claim made on this site, please write to info@redoakliving.eu.
